About Ethio Tools

Ethio Tools is a free platform built by young Ethiopian developers for Ethiopians at home and across the diaspora. Forty-five tools across five categories — language, finance, calendar, education, and utilities — all built around Ethiopian context that generic tool sites ignore. Income tax follows ERA Proclamation 979/2016 and Labour Proclamation 1156/2019. The calendar covers all 13 months of the Ge'ez year. Keyboards, OCR, and spell check support Amharic, Tigrinya, and Oromo script. No account, no download, and every calculation follows current Ethiopian law and official government data.

Discover Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations on Earth, with a rich history spanning thousands of years. Known as the cradle of humanity, it is home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the ancient obelisks of Axum, and the breathtaking Simien Mountains. Ethiopia is the origin of coffee, discovered by goat herder Kaldi over 1,000 years ago in the Kaffa region. The country nevercolonized, it maintains its independence through centuries of foreign invasions and colonization attempts.

Ethiopia operates on its own unique calendar and time system. The Ethiopian calendar has 13 months, with 12 months of 30 days each and a final month of 5 or 6 days. It runs 7 to 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar, meaning Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash) falls on September 11. Ethiopian time is equally distinctive: the day begins at sunrise, so what the rest of the world calls 6:00 AM is counted as hour 1 in Ethiopian time. This tradition dates back centuries and reflects Ethiopia's deep connection to its own cultural rhythms.

The country is remarkably diverse, home to over 80 languages and 200 distinct dialects. Amharic serves as the official working language, while Tigrinya, Oromo, Somali, Sidamo, and many other languages are spoken throughout its regions. The Ge'ez script used to write Amharic and Tigrinya is one of the oldest writing systems still in active use, with roots going back to the 5th century BC. This linguistic diversity makes Ethiopia one of the most culturally rich countries in Africa.

Ethiopian cuisine is world-renowned for its bold flavors and communal dining traditions. The cornerstone of Ethiopian food is injera, a sour flatbread made from teff flour, which serves as both plate and utensil. Doro wot, a spicy chicken stew slow-cooked in berbere spice, is perhaps the most famous dish, while kitfo (minced meat seasoned with mitmita) and tibs (grilled meat) are popular favorites. Meals are traditionally eaten communally from a single platter, reflecting Ethiopia's deeply social culture.

Ethiopia's natural landscape is extraordinarily varied, ranging from the cool, temperate highlands of Addis Ababa to the searing heat of the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. The country experiences three distinct seasons: kiremt (the summer rainy season from June to September), belg (a brief spring rainy season from February to April), and bona (the dry winter season from October to January). This geographic diversity supports a remarkable variety of ecosystems, wildlife, and agricultural traditions across different regions.

Ethiopian music and arts have gained international recognition for their distinctive sound and visual aesthetics. Traditional instruments like the masenqo (a one-stringed fiddle), the krar (a lyre), and the washint (a bamboo flute) form the foundation of Ethiopian musical traditions. Ethiopian jazz has developed its own unique sound blending these traditional elements with modern influences. The country is also famous for its vibrant traditional clothing, handwoven textiles, and distinctive art forms including intricate crosses and religious artwork.
