About the Ethiopian Amharic Keyboard
If you grew up in Ethiopia, you probably had a Fidel chart on your classroom wall. But if you are in the diaspora, studying Amharic abroad, or working at an NGO that needs to send reports in Amharic, your laptop almost certainly came with a Latin keyboard and no obvious way to type a single Ethiopic character. That gap is exactly what this tool fills. You open it in a browser, click the characters you need, and paste the result wherever you are writing.
Ethiopic script, known as Fidel, is one of the oldest writing systems still in daily active use anywhere in the world. Its structure is distinctive: 35 base consonant families, each modified by seven vowel forms, giving 245 core characters before accounting for additional sounds. Every character is self-contained, so there is no combining or stacking the way you see in Arabic or Devanagari. The grid layout of this keyboard maps directly onto that family structure, so once you understand that each row is one consonant family, the whole system becomes legible very quickly.
Using the keyboard is straightforward. Click any Fidel character to insert it into the text area. The row you last clicked stays highlighted, making it easy to move across vowel forms of the same consonant without losing your place. When you are done composing, one click copies everything to your clipboard so you can paste into WhatsApp, a Word document, a government form, or wherever you need the text.
For longer documents, pairing this keyboard with a dedicated Amharic font on your device will give you the cleanest rendering. Noto Serif Ethiopic and Abyssinica SIL are both free and widely used in Ethiopian publishing. If you need to check what you have typed before sharing it, the spell checker on this site can help catch unfamiliar words.
