CBE publishes separate buy and sell rates for each currency. The buy rate is what CBE pays you when you bring foreign currency to the bank. The sell rate is what you pay when you are buying foreign currency from CBE. The gap between the two is the bank's margin on the transaction, and that spread varies by currency. USD, EUR, SAR, and AED carry the highest transaction volumes in Ethiopia because those are the countries where most of the diaspora lives and works. GBP, CAD, and AUD are also commonly needed for remittances and business imports.
