Amharic Proverbs (ምሳሌዎች)

ቀስ ብሎ የሚሄድ ሩቅ ይደርሳል።

He who goes slowly reaches far.

ዕውቀት ሲጨምር ኩራት ይቀንሳል።

As knowledge increases, pride decreases.

ትምህርት ቤት ቢቃጠል አስተማሪ አይቃጠልም።

You can burn the school, but the teacher cannot be burned.

ጠቢቡ ዞሮ ሞኙ ፊቱ ይሄዳል።

The wise man goes around; the fool goes straight.

ሞኝ ቢናደድ ቀርፋፋ ቢናደድ ሁሉ ጊዜ ያልፋል።

Whether the fool or the slow man is angry, time passes.

ዕዳ ሳትከፍል ሰላም ሊኖርህ አይቻልም።

Without paying your debt, you cannot have peace.

ቃሉ ቢሮጥ ሰውነቱ ይቀራል።

The word may run ahead, but the person stays behind.

ሁሉ ነገሩ ጊዜ አለው።

Everything has its time.

አንቀሳቃሽ ድንጋይ ሙዝ አይበቅልበት።

Moss does not grow on a rolling stone.

ቸኩሎ የሚሄድ ሰው ዥጉርጉር ያጣዋል።

A person in a hurry loses their loincloth.

ዝምብ ሰው ሲሄድ ይሄዳል ሲቀር ይቀራል።

The fly goes when people go and stays when people stay.

ቀበሮ ሲሮጥ ለምን ትጠይቅ — ኋላውን ተመልከት።

When the fox runs, don't ask why — look behind it.

ቀበሮ ብዙ ሲያውቅ ወጥመድ ይወጣዋል።

The more the fox knows, the more traps catch it.

አንዴ ቢናቅ ሁሌ ይናቃል።

Once disrespected, always disrespected.

ማርን ብትልስ ሹካ አትክደዉ።

When licking honey, do not abandon the stick.

ጥሩ ዜና ቶሎ ሲሰማ ዝቅ ብሎ ተቀበለው።

When good news comes quickly, receive it humbly.

አንድ ጣቶ ዝምብ አይይዝ።

A single finger cannot catch a flea.

ወንድሞች ቢጣሉ ጠላት ሲጠጋ ይታረቃሉ።

Brothers quarrel, but reconcile when enemies draw near.

ሲሳሳ ይጠፋ ሲወደዱ ይቀራሉ።

When hated, one disappears; when loved, one stays.

ዘመድ ካልረዳ ሰው ያለ ዛፍ ነው።

Without relatives to help, a person is a tree without shelter.

አንድ ሰው ሁሉ ሰው ነው፤ አንድ ሰው ብቻ ምንም ሰው አይደለም።

One person together is everyone; one person alone is no one.

ሁሉም ሰው ለራሱ ብቻ ቢጸልይ ሰማዩ ደርቆ ይቀራል።

If everyone prays only for themselves, the sky will dry up.

ሰው ሳይሄድ መንገዱ ይጠፋል።

Without someone walking it, a path disappears.

ሰው ለሰው ዘር ነው።

A person is a seed for another person.

ሐሰት ሲሮጥ እውነት ይከተለዋል።

Falsehood runs, but truth follows it.

ሸፋጭ ቢሸፍተን አምላክ አያሸፍት።

Even if a liar deceives us, God cannot be deceived.

ፍትህ ሲዘገይ ሽፍቶች ይሞሉ።

When justice delays, outlaws multiply.

ሰው ሳያውቅ ሰማይ ያውቃል።

What people don't know, the sky knows.

አፍ ሳቀ ሆድ ሳቀ ማለት አይደለም።

The mouth smiling does not mean the stomach is smiling.

ውሃ ያጠጣህ ምንጩን አትርሳ።

Do not forget the spring that gave you water.

ፀሐይ ካልወጣ ጤዛ አይጠፋም።

Without the sun rising, the dew does not disappear.

ዱር ወፍ ካልዘፈነ ጫካ ዝም ይላል።

If the forest bird does not sing, the forest is silent.

ሌሊቱ ሲወድቅ ጨረቃ ትወጣለች።

When the night falls, the moon rises.

ዝሆን ቢረሳ ቀስተ ደመናን ዝናቡ ያስታውሰዋል።

Even if the elephant forgets, the rain will remind it of the rainbow.

ዓምድ ካልቆሙ ቤቱ ይወድቃል።

Without pillars, the house will fall.

አህያ ሲወድ ጓደኛው ይጎዳዋል።

When the donkey loves, it hurts its friend.

ሰው ቢበዛ አህያ አይቀናም።

When there are many people, the donkey does not envy.

ውሻ ሲዞር ዶሮ ትበላለች።

While the dog wanders, the chicken eats.

አንበሳ ወዳጁን ያናኝ፤ ድመት ጠላቱን።

A lion shakes its friend; a cat shakes its enemy.

ቀበሮ ሲሮጥ ምስጢሩን ሰምቶ ነው።

When the fox runs, it has heard the secret.

ዝምብ ቢሮጥ ቤቱ ይቀራዋል።

The fly may run, but its home remains.

ነፍስ ካለ ተስፋ አለ።

Where there is life, there is hope.

ዕድሜ ሲረዝም ጠፍቶ የነበረ ወዳጅ ይገኛል።

As life grows long, lost friends are found.

ሕፃን ሲወለድ ዓለምን ይዞ ይወለዳል።

When a child is born, it is born holding the world.

ሞት ሁሉም ነው — ቀኑ ብቻ ያልታወቀ።

Death comes for everyone — only the day is unknown.

ሌሊቱ ቢረዝም ጠዋቱ ይወጣዋል።

However long the night, the morning will follow.

ዛሬ ቢከፋ ነገ ይሻላል።

If today is bad, tomorrow will be better.

እሳት ሲቃጠለው ጭስ ያወጣል።

When fire burns, it produces smoke.

ዘራ ዘራ ሳያዳምጥ ዘሩ ይቀፍዳል።

If you sow without listening, your seed is wasted.

ዝምብ ቢዝምብ ጫካ ቢቸኩስ — ጫካ አይናወጥም።

However the fly buzzes and the forest stirs — the forest does not shake.

ልፋቱ ላፊ ይዘልፈዋል።

Work shames the lazy man.

ሲተኛ ሲተኛ ሲሮጥ ሲሮጥ — ዉጤቱ ይለያያል።

Those who sleep sleep, those who run run — the outcome differs.

ቅጥ ሳትሸምስ ሸቀጥ አትሸጥ።

Don't sell cloth before you weave it.

ልጅ ተወልዶ ሳያለቅስ ወተት አይሰጡት።

A baby is not given milk until it cries.

ልጅ ያሳደጉ ያደርሳል ወይ ያደናቅፋል።

The child you raise will either help or trip you.

ቤት ሲሠራ ዘመዶቹ ያስታውሳል — ሲሸጥ ያስታውሳቸዋል።

He remembers relatives when building the house — and when selling it.

ለጋስ ሰው ወዳጅ ይበዛዋል።

A generous person has many friends.

እናት ልጅ ከፈለቀ ቤት ውስጥ ዘፋኝ ቢያጡ አይቀሩም።

If the mother sings with her child, there will never be a lack of singers in the house.

ሀብት ያለ ጤና ምንም አይደለም።

Wealth without health is nothing.

ደሃ ቢሞት ሀብታም ቢቀር ኀዘን ሁሉ ልቅሶ ነው።

Whether the poor die or the rich remain, grief is grief.

ሁለት ቤት ያለው ሁለቱም ይቃጠሉበታል።

He who has two houses is burned in both.

ስስታም ሰው ሲሞት ሀብቱ ለሌሎች ይቀራል።

When a miser dies, his wealth is left for others.

ድህነቱ ዕዳ አይደለም — ክፉ ሰዉነቱ ዕዳ ነው።

Poverty is not a debt — bad character is.

ፍቅር ዓይን አይኖርም።

Love has no eyes.

ጠጅ ጠጪ ሃሳቡን ይናገራል።

The mead drinker speaks his mind.

ወዳጅ ከሌለ ሰው ዛፍ ነው።

Without a friend, a person is a tree.

ጎረቤት ቢርቅ ቤት ቢፈርስ ሀዘን ነው።

A distant neighbor and a fallen house are both grief.

አፍ ቢያሳምሙህ ሆድ ያስብሃል።

Though the mouth hurts you, the stomach will think of you.

ቢቃጠልም ቢቀዘቅዝም ምግቡ ምግብ ነው።

Whether burnt or cold, food is food.

ረሃብ ቢሮጥ ዳቦ ያዘጋጃል።

If hunger runs ahead, bread prepares itself.

ዝሆን ከዝምቡ ሞት አይፈራም።

The elephant does not fear death by a fly.

ሰዉ ሲያዋራ ሲዋሽ ሰምዶ ሲናገር ዝምታ ያሸንፋል።

While people talk and lie, silence wins in the end.

እንቁላል ሳይፈለፈል ዶሮ አይቆጥሩ።

Do not count chickens before the eggs hatch.

ጊዜ ካለፈ ዕድሉ አይመለስ።

When the time has passed, the opportunity does not return.

ቅጥ ሳታሳምሩ ቤት ሳይሞቅ አትቁሩ።

Don't be cold before the house is warm.

ሰው ቁሙ ቢቆም ሁሉ ቁም ቢቆሙ ሁሉ።

If a person stands firm, let all stand firm.
