About the Ethiopian Stock Exchange (ESX)

The Ethiopian Stock Exchange — officially the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) — is Ethiopia’s first regulated stock market. It launched in January 2025 with a bell-ringing ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, marking the start of formal capital markets in the country. ESX provides a transparent platform for trading shares, bonds, and government securities.

About the Ethiopian Stock Exchange

The Ethiopian Stock Exchange — known formally as the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX) — is genuinely new. It launched in January 2025 and began formal equity trading shortly after, making it one of the youngest stock exchanges in Africa. For individual investors in Ethiopia who previously had no regulated way to buy or sell shares beyond informal bank share purchases, this is a significant shift. This tracker pulls daily price data from the official ESX ticker so you can follow the market without navigating the exchange’s own interface.

ESX was established under Capital Market Proclamation No. 1248/2021 and is regulated by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA). It operates two segments. The Main Board lists shares from established companies, currently dominated by commercial banks: Awash Bank (AWAB), Wegagen Bank (WGBX), and Gadaa Bank (GDAB) are among the listed names. The Cash Market handles short-term government debt instruments, specifically Treasury Bills issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The exchange is expected to expand as more companies go through the listing process, including several large private banks and eventually Ethio Telecom.

Prices on the Ethiopian Stock Exchange are quoted in Ethiopian Birr (ETB). The change column shows the absolute price move from the prior session, and the percentage column shows the relative move. Because this is still an early-stage market with relatively few trading days and listed securities, price swings can look dramatic by international standards. Newly listed shares in particular may show large movements on their first trading days as the market discovers their price for the first time. To buy or sell shares directly, you need to open an account with a licensed broker authorized by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority.
