About the Ethiopian GPA Calculator
Every university student in Ethiopia eventually faces the same anxious question before exam season ends: what GPA am I sitting at, and will it get me where I want to go? Whether you are a first-year student at Addis Ababa University trying to understand the grading system, a final-year student at Jimma or Haramaya calculating whether you have a shot at First Class Honours, or a recent graduate preparing a postgraduate application that asks for your GPA on a 4.0 scale, you need a calculator that reflects how Ethiopian institutions actually work.
Ethiopian universities use a 4.0 GPA scale with degree classification bands that most students learn only gradually over the course of their studies. First Class Honours requires a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above. Second Class Upper falls between 3.50 and 3.74, Second Class Lower between 3.00 and 3.49, and a Pass between 2.00 and 2.99. Different institutions including AAU, AASTU, and Jimma may have slightly different internal policies, but the 4.0 scale and these classification bands are effectively universal across Ethiopian higher education.
GPA is not a simple average of your grades. Each course must be weighted by its credit hours, which means a five-credit Engineering Mathematics course pulls your average much harder than a one-credit Physical Education course. This calculator handles that weighting automatically. Enter each course, select your grade from the dropdown, set the credit hours, and the tool computes both your semester GPA and your running cumulative GPA as you add courses.
The grading scale follows the pattern common to Ethiopian universities: A is 4.0, B+ is 3.5, B is 3.0, B- is 2.75, C+ is 2.5, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0. If your institution uses a slightly different mapping, double-check your student handbook, as a few universities omit some intermediate grades. This tool gives you an accurate picture of where you stand so you can plan the marks you still need before graduation.
