What Happened to Prices
In 2011, the headline rate hit 33.2 percent as a global food price spike and drought severely impacted Ethiopia. COVID supply chain disruption, conflict in Tigray, and currency depreciation compounded inflation through 2020 and into 2022, when the rate peaked at 33.9 percent driven by fuel import costs and birr devaluation. By 2023 and 2024, prices began to moderate gradually as the IMF reform program and currency float took effect.

About the Ethiopian Inflation Calculator
Ethiopia has lived through some of the highest inflation rates of any country in the world over the past fifteen years. If you are comparing a salary offer to what you earned in 2017, or trying to understand whether a business that was profitable in 2019 would still be profitable today, you need to account for inflation. The numbers look very different once you do.
This tool uses annual Consumer Price Index data from the World Bank and the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia covering 2010 through 2024. Ethiopia's inflation peaked above 33 percent in 2022, which means that a 10,000 ETB savings balance from that year was worth considerably less in real terms just twelve months later. The calculator compounds each year's rate cumulatively, so when you select a range like 2015 to 2024, you see the full accumulated erosion across that entire period, not just a single year's figure.
Enter an amount and choose your start and end years, and the tool shows you the equivalent value in the destination year along with how much purchasing power was gained or lost. This is useful for economists, researchers, and students doing comparative analysis, but also for ordinary people trying to make sense of long-term contracts, wage negotiations, or the real returns on their savings. If you want to know what 5,000 ETB from 2015 is actually worth today, this calculator gives you a data-backed answer.
