About Qubee
Afaan Oromoo uses the Qubee alphabet — a Latin-based script officially adopted in 1991. Unlike Amharic and Tigrinya which use Ethiopic (Ge'ez) script, Oromo is written in Latin letters. Qubee includes special digraphs like dh, ch, sh, and ph to represent sounds unique to the Oromo language.
About the Afaan Oromoo Qubee Keyboard
Oromo speakers, students in Oromia-medium schools, journalists writing in Afaan Oromoo, and government officials in the Oromia region all face the same frustration: standard keyboards were not designed for Qubee. Typing a word like "dhibeessa" or "aanaa" requires either a dedicated input method or a lot of copying and pasting. Teachers preparing lesson materials in Afaan Oromoo deal with this every day. This keyboard is a direct answer to that need.
Afaan Oromoo is one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa, with over 40 million speakers primarily in Ethiopia and Kenya. It is written in the Qubee alphabet, a Latin-based script officially adopted in 1991. Qubee was developed to accurately represent the sounds of the Oromo language, which meant including long vowels written as double letters (aa, ee, ii, oo, uu) and several digraphs (dh, ch, sh, ny, ph) that do not appear on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Without all of these characters, it is simply not possible to write correct Afaan Oromoo.
The keyboard presents the full Qubee alphabet alongside a dedicated special characters tab that highlights the long vowels and digraphs. Click any character to insert it into the text area, then copy your text into any document, email, or social media post. Nothing is installed and nothing is sent anywhere: the whole tool runs in your browser.
The Full Qubee Alphabet tab also serves as a quick reference for learners who are still becoming familiar with the writing system. If you regularly write in Afaan Oromoo and want a more permanent solution, pairing this tool with the Oromo text utilities tool on this site gives you a complete writing environment for everyday work.
