About the Overtime Calculator

If you work irregular hours, you probably know the frustration of receiving your payslip and not being able to verify whether your overtime was calculated correctly. Construction workers, factory shift workers, security staff, and anyone who regularly stays late or works weekends in Ethiopia all have this problem. The only way to check the figure is to do the math yourself, and this tool makes that easy.

Article 67 of Labour Proclamation 1156/2019 sets the overtime rates that all Ethiopian employers must follow. Overtime worked on regular weekdays, meaning hours beyond the standard eight-hour day from Monday through Friday, is paid at 1.25 times your normal hourly rate. Work done on Saturdays is compensated at 1.5 times the normal rate. Sundays and public holidays carry the highest multiplier of 2.0 times the normal rate, which reflects both the legal obligation and the personal cost of working on those days.

Your base hourly rate is derived from your monthly salary divided by 208, which comes from 8 hours a day multiplied by 26 working days per month. Enter your salary and the number of overtime hours in each category, and the calculator shows you what each type earns separately, the total overtime amount, and your complete pay for that period. If the number your employer gives you is different from what this tool produces, that is worth asking about.
