About the Payroll Calculator

When you are hiring someone in Ethiopia, the salary you agree on in the contract is only part of what you will actually spend. Small business owners, startup founders, and HR departments that budget based on gross salary alone routinely underestimate their true staff costs. This calculator shows you both sides of the equation at once, what the employee takes home and what the hire actually costs the business.

Under Labour Proclamation 1156/2019, both the employee and the employer contribute to the pension fund, but at different rates. The employee pays 7 percent of gross salary, which reduces their taxable income before ERA Proclamation 979/2016's seven-bracket income tax schedule is applied. The employer, on top of that, contributes a separate 11 percent of the gross salary directly to the pension fund. This employer contribution does not come out of the employee's paycheck. It is an additional cost sitting on top of the agreed salary.

What this means in practice is that a staff member earning 8,000 ETB per month costs the employer roughly 8,880 ETB in total, before any other overhead. For a growing team of five or ten people, that gap between quoted salary and actual cost compounds quickly. This tool lets you model any gross salary, see the exact pension and tax deductions, and know what figure to put in your budget from the start.
