About the Tigrinya Keyboard

Tigrinya speakers in the diaspora, journalists writing for Eritrean and Tigrayan audiences, and students submitting academic work in their mother tongue all run into the same obstacle: most computers and phones are not configured to type the Ge'ez script out of the box. Installing an input method requires administrative access you may not have, and the setup process is not simple. This keyboard bypasses all of that. Open it in a browser, click the characters you need, and paste your text wherever it needs to go.

Tigrinya (ትግርኛ) is the official language of Eritrea and one of the recognised languages of the Tigray region of Ethiopia, with around 7 to 9 million speakers. It is written in the same Ethiopic (Ge'ez) script as Amharic, but with its own distinct character set and vocabulary. The script has 35 consonant base rows, each with 7 vowel forms called orders, giving well over 245 distinct characters in total. The keyboard here provides all of them.

The keyboard can be filtered by vowel order using the tabs above the character grid, which is useful when you know the consonant sound you need and want to quickly find the right form. The "all" view shows the complete grid at once as a reference. Click any character to append it to the text area, then use the copy button to take your text into any other application.
